Planning
When to Start a Pool Project for Next Summer
The quiet months decide whether you swim in June. How a Wisconsin pool project actually runs, and why the enquiry that arrives in spring is usually planning for the following year.
Almost every pool enquiry arrives between April and July, and a good proportion of them are asking about the summer that has already started. The honest answer is usually that they are planning for the next one - not because anybody is being obstructive, but because of how the calendar physically works here.
The excavation window is the fixed point
Everything else in a pool project can be moved. Excavation cannot: it is bounded by frost at one end and by every other project wanting the same weeks at the other. That window is the scarce resource, and it gets allocated to projects that are ready when it opens.
Ready means designed, permitted and agreed. A project that starts its design in May is not competing for that window; it is waiting for the next one.
What has to happen before a machine arrives
| Stage | What governs how long it takes |
|---|---|
| Site survey | Your availability, mostly - and on a second home that is a real constraint |
| Design | How many rounds of revision; usually shorter than owners expect |
| Permitting | The authority's queue, not yours. On a lake parcel there are often two |
| Scheduling | Where you sit in the queue when the ground opens |
Permitting is the one people plan worst, because it is the one they cannot influence by being organised. On a shoreland parcel a county review and a municipal review run on separate timelines - covered in the shoreline piece - and neither accelerates because a build slot is waiting.
Why autumn is the right time to start talking
- The site can still be surveyed properly before the ground hardens.
- An existing pool being closed is at its most diagnosable, which matters if this is a remodel-or-replace question.
- Permitting has months rather than weeks, so a query does not cost a season.
- You are choosing a slot rather than accepting one.
What "swimming by summer" actually requires
Construction itself is a matter of weeks once digging starts. The reason a project spans a season is everything either side: the design and permitting before, and the decking, barrier, landscaping and commissioning after. Owners tend to picture the excavation and under-picture the finishing, which is where schedules slip in practice.
If you are reading this in June
It is still worth starting. A conversation now means a design settled over summer, permitting resolved in autumn, and a slot secured for the first available window - which is a materially better position than starting the same conversation next April alongside everyone else. The alternative is not a faster pool; it is the same pool, a year later, with less choice about when.
