Pool remodeling, replacement and new construction for Williams Bay - a north-shore village where a great many lots run down toward the water, and where shoreland rules shape the project before any design does.
Williams Bay sits on the north shore of Geneva Lake, and the shape of the village is the shape of its ground: parcels that fall away toward the water, mature tree cover, and a road network that was laid out around the lake rather than across it. All three of those things matter to a pool project long before anyone discusses finishes.
The constraint owners meet first here, as at Fontana at the west end of the lake, is the shore yard. Walworth County shoreland zoning defines it as the land within 75 feet of the ordinary high water mark, and swimming pools are named on the list of structures prohibited there. On a lot that slopes to the lake, that frequently removes the flattest and most obvious ground from consideration. Where an established development pattern exists the setback can be averaged against the adjacent principal structures, but it can never come below 35 feet from the water.
What that means practically is that the pool usually goes behind or beside the house rather than between the house and the lake - and that the design conversation is about making that position feel intentional rather than like a compromise. Slope is the other half of it: falling ground means retaining, and retaining near water runs into the rule that grade changes within 75 feet of the lake are generally not authorised at all.
Access is the third factor. Wooded lots with narrow side yards and neighbours close on both sides frequently rule out a craned fiberglass shell, which is a site fact rather than a preference. A vinyl-liner pool is assembled in place from components that can be carried in, which is why it suits a good deal of the ground here.
