Designing a Pool Around Entertaining, Not Just Swimming

A pool built for hosting is a different object from one built for swimming. The differences are mostly in the ground around it, and they are hard to retrofit.

Ask a builder for a pool and you will be asked about size, depth and shape. Those questions are about swimming. If the honest answer is that the pool will be swum in occasionally and stood beside constantly, they are the wrong questions to start with.

A good share of the pools on this lake are used that way, and it is worth designing for it deliberately rather than discovering it afterwards.

The deck is the room

On an entertaining-led project the paved area is the space people occupy and the water is the view from it. That inverts the usual budget conversation, where decking is trimmed to protect the pool spec. If twenty people are going to be on that surface, its size, its circulation and how it drains matter more than another two feet of pool length.

The specific failure is a generous pool ringed by a walkway. It photographs well and it seats nobody.

Circulation, which nobody notices until it is wrong

People move between a few fixed points at a gathering: the door to the house, the food, the seating, and the water. If those form a route that crosses the wet zone at the shallow-end steps, that junction becomes the bottleneck for the entire evening. Moving steps to a corner instead of the middle of a long side is a drawing-stage decision that costs nothing and is essentially impossible to change later.

Depth is a hosting decision too

A pool that is uniformly deep is a pool most guests stand at the edge of. A generous shallow shelf - somewhere to sit in water, where a conversation with someone on a chair is possible - changes how a pool is used at a gathering more than any other single feature. It is also where children end up, which resolves a supervision problem at the same time.

Shade, which the Midwest under-plans

An unshaded paved area in July is unusable for several hours a day. Structures, planting or a pergola all work; what does not work is assuming the mature trees you are keeping happen to fall in the right place. They generally do not, and their shade moves through the afternoon.

Light, which decides whether the evening continues

The difference between a pool people leave at dusk and one they stay at is lighting, and it is mostly about the surroundings rather than the water. In-pool lighting looks striking and illuminates nothing useful. Low-level light on paths, steps and level changes is what lets people move around confidently after dark - which, in a climate where the warm hours are often the late ones, is a large part of the season.

What this means for the quote

An entertaining-led design usually moves money from the pool into the ground around it. That is a reallocation rather than an increase, and it is worth being explicit about at the design stage so the comparison between quotes is like for like. Our cost factors page covers why decking is the item most often underestimated.
